The Customs House was built in 1859 to a design by architect James Murray as part of the wider development of the harbour and its railway station. Today only a small section of this grand building remains, the remainder having been largely destroyed during World War Two. Folkestone Harbour & Seafront Development Company restored the remaining fragment of history in 2017, repairing the roof and cleaning the stonework, including the carved head of Poseidon – Greek god of the sea and protector of seafarers – that presides over the doorway.
