BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIP OFFSHORE POWERBOAT RACING
FOLKESTONE GRAND PRIX
1ST & 2ND SEPTEMBER 2012
For a second successive year the seas off Folkestone Harbour and the Warren will reverberate to the sound of high powered race engines as competitors in the British Powerboat Championships hurl their craft at up to 80 mph around the orange turn buoys.
The best viewpoints will be on the East Cliff, the Sandy Beach, Coronation Parade and the Warren.
Before and after racing the boats will be craned into the dry pits, situated on South Quay and visitors of all are welcome to come and meet the drivers and get close up to the boats. Always a great photo opportunity, but remember – No Smoking in the pits.
Some boats to look out for are 2-926, the orange and white, ex-world championship winning batboat of the Jackson brothers from Hampshire and B28 ‘Pirates Cave’ driven by Sharon & Stuart Atlee from Kent, who came fourth in the 2011 World Championship.
There is also a local newcomer team of Kevin Edmondson & Annika Hawthorne from Chartham Hatch in their Phantom 16 ‘Sea Fever’.
The 3.5 mile racecourse extends from two buoys outside the Harbour to two turn marks in East Wear Bay. There will be two races on Saturday, one at 12.00 and another at 12.30 and one main race at 1 pm on Sunday, lasting about an hour.
